Truncated Mean (Trimmed Mean) Calculator

The truncated mean calculator is a free online tool for calculating the truncated mean of a set of numbers.

Truncated Mean Calculator

Please enter numbers. Numbers separated by commas or new lines:

Eg, 8 referee ratings [8, 9, 8.5, 7, 6.5, 9, 6, 7], truncated 12.5%, what is the trimmed mean? Enter 8, 9, 8.5, 7, 6.5, 9, 6, 7 into the first input box and enter 12.5 in the second input box, then click Calculate button.

What is the truncated mean?

As the name suggests, a truncated mean or trimmed mean is the average calculated after discarding some of the lowest and highest data in the dataset. The amount discarded is usually expressed as a percentage.

For example, in diving, there are 10 referees’ scores, one highest score and one lowest score are removed, and the average of the remaining 8 referees’ scores is used as the actual score. Here, the truncated percentage here is 10%.

How to calculate the truncated mean?

  1. Find the number of truncations, multiply the total by the truncation percentage.
  2. Sort the data from smallest to largest.
  3. Truncating part of the highest and lowest data.
  4. Calculate the average of the remaining data.

For example, 8 referee ratings [8, 9, 8.5, 7, 6.5, 9, 6, 7], truncated 12.5%, what is the trimmed mean?

The number of truncations is

8 * 12.5% = 8 * 0.125 = 1

Sort the ratings.

6, 6.5, 7, 7, 8, 8.5, 9, 9

The truncated number is 1, which means that one highest score and one lowest score are dropped. The remaining ratings are as follows

6.5, 7, 7, 8, 8.5, 9

Calculate the average of these 6 numbers

6.5 + 7 + 7 + 8 + 8.5 + 96 = 466 = 7.67

How to use the truncated mean calculator

Using the calculator is simple, follow these 2 steps:

  • 1Enter numbers in the first input box. Separate each number with a comma or newline.
  • 2Enter the truncated percentage in the second input box.
  • 3Click Calculate button to calculate the truncated mean of input numbers, or click Reset button to start a new calculation.

Like the example above. Enter 8, 9, 8.5, 7, 6.5, 9, 6, 7 in the first input box and enter 12.5 in the second input box. Then, click Calculate button.

As shown in the figure, the truncated mean is also 7.67.
