Addition Method

Increase sequentially until the sum is reached.

100 + 5 = 105

105 + 5 = 110

110 + 5 = 115

115 + 5 = 120

120 + 5= 125

125 + 5 = 130

130 + 5 = 135

135 + 5 = 140

140 + 5 = 145

145 + 5 = 150

It can be easily calculated that the answer is 10 times. This method is simple but has a fatal flaw. If the number is large, multiple calculations are required.

Division Method

First, calculate the difference between the starting and ending numbers.

Second, divide the difference by the addend to calculate the times.

For example, how many times add 5 to 100 so that the sum is 150?

The starting number is 100, the ending number is 150, and the difference between them is 150 – 100 = 50.

Divide 50 by 5 to calculate the times.

505 = 10

So, there are 10 times you have to add 5 to 100 for a total of 150.

Arithmetic Sequence Method

Still the above example: how many times add 5 to 100 so that the sum is 150?

According to the definition of an arithmetic sequence, the first item of the sequence is 100, the common difference is 5, and the last item is greater than or equal to 150.

The formula for the Nth term of the arithmetic sequence

The formula for the Nth term of the arithmetic sequenceAmong them, a1 = 100, d = 5, an = 150. Substitute them into the formula to calculate the value of n.

150 = 100 + (n – 1) * 5

(n – 1) * 5 = 50

n – 1 = 10

n = 11

Why 11 instead of 10?

There is a detail to note here, the result only represents the number of items in the arithmetic sequence, not the number of additions.

The add times should be the number of terms minus 1, as expressed in the formula.

So, the answer is also 11 – 1 = 10.
