What is the quadratic mean?

Quadratic mean is a type of average calculated as the square root of the arithmetic mean of the squares of the values in the data set. It is also called root mean square. Referred to as RMS.

The formula for the quadratic mean is

Formula of quadratic meanIt is often used to calculate the average difference between a set of data and certain data. For example, the voltage and current values of alternating current, and the average velocity of the midpoint of the displacement in a uniformly accelerated linear motion are all expressed by the root mean square of their actual values.

How to calculate the quadratic mean?

Obviously, to calculate the quadratic mean, 4 steps are required:

  • 1Calculate the square of each number.
  • 2Calculate the sum of squares of all numbers.
  • 3Divide the sum of squares by the count of numbers.
  • 4Calculate the square root of the result of the third step.

For example, calculate the quadratic mean of data 1 to 5.

First, calculate the sum of squares of all numbers.

12 + 22 + 32 + 42 + 52 = 55

Then, Divide the sum of squares by the count of numbers.

555 = 11

Finally, calculate the square root.

√11 = 3.32

So, the quadratic mean of data 1 to 5 is 3.32

How to use the quadratic mean calculator

The procedure to use the quadratic mean calculator is as follows:

  • 1Enter numbers in the input boxes. Separate each number with a comma or newline.
  • 2Click Calculate button to calculate the quadratic mean of input numbers.
  • 3Click the Reset button to start a new calculation.

Solved examples using the quadratic mean calculator

Example 1: What is the root mean square of set 3, 4, 5 and 7?

Enter 3, 4, 5, 7 into the input box and click Calculate button, as shown in the figure, the root mean square of them is 4.97.

√32 + 42 + 52 + 724 = √994 = √24.75 = 4.97

What is the root mean square of set 3, 4, 5 and 7?

Example 2: What is the quadratic mean of 11 23 and 35?

Enter 11, 23, 35 into the input box and click Calculate button, as shown in the figure, the root mean square of them is 25.

√112 + 232 + 3523 = √18753 = √625 = 25

What is the quadratic mean of 11 23 and 35?
