How to sort fractions?
he sorting of fractions is different from integers because fractions include numerators and denominators. Therefore, when sorting fractions, it is necessary to judge the numerator and denominator. The main rules are:
-
When the denominator is the same, the numerator is larger, the fraction will be larger. Such as, 23 > 13
-
When the numerator is the same, the larger of the denominator, the smaller the fraction. For example, 12 > 13
-
When the denominators are different, you must reduction of fractions to a common denominator first. Then, compare them according to the principle of 1.
Apart from that, there is another way. Since fractions and decimals can be converted to each other, there is a one-to-one correspondence between them. So, when ordering fractions, you can convert fractions into decimals first, and then sort them.
For example, sort 12, 14 and 38 from largest to smallest
First, convert fractions into decimals
12 = 0.5
14 = 0.25
38 = 0.375
Second, sort the decimals.
0.5 > 0.375 > 0.25
Finally, get a sorted answer from largest to smallest
12 > 38 > 14
Whether converted to the same denominator or decimals, manual calculations are more troublesome. Therefore, we have developed this online free ordering fractions calculator, which not only saves the tedious calculation process, but also displays 2 sorting results at the same time: from smallest to largest and from largest to smallest. Let’s look at how the calculator is used.
How to use the ordering fractions calculator
As we all know, fractions include proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed fractions. So in order to support the calculation of mixed fractions, we specially reserved the whole number input field when designing this calculator. If it is a mixed fraction, enter the whole number part, numerator and denominator into the corresponding input boxes. If it is a proper fraction or an improper fraction, just enter the numerator and denominator, leaving the whole number input box blank.
At the same time, this calculator supports the sorting of integers or decimals. Input the integers or decimals into the whole number input box without entering the numerator and denominator. In this way, you can sort fractions, integers and decimals at one time.
The ordering fractions calculator displays only 3 scores by default. If you want to sort more fractions, click “add more fractions“. Once all data are entered, click the Calculate button to get the sorting results. Press the Reset button to prepare for another sort.
Next, let’s take a few examples to see how this calculator is used.
Solved examples using ordering fractions calculator
Ordering Only Fractions
Example: sort 25, 38, 710, 14 from largest to smallest
Method 1: Convert to the same denominator
25 = 1640
38 = 1540
710 = 2840
14 = 1040
The denominator is the same, the numerator is larger, the fraction will be larger.
2840 > 1640 > 1540 > 1040
710 > 25 > 38 > 14
Method 2: Convert to decimals
25 = 0.4
38 = 0.375
710 = 0.7
14 = 0.25
0.7 > 0.4 > 0.375 > 0.25
710 > 25 > 38 > 14
Ordering includes mixed fractions
Example: sort 25, 223, 815, 136 from largest to smallest
Method 1: Convert to the same denominator
First, convert the mixed fraction to the improper fraction
223 = 83
Then, convert to the same denominator.
25 = 1230
83 = 8030
815 = 1630
136 = 6530
The denominator is the same, the numerator is larger, the fraction will be larger.
8030 > 6530 > 1630 > 1230
223 > 136 > 815 > 25
Method 2: Convert to decimals
25 = 0.4
223 = 2.667
815 = 0.533
136 = 2.1667
2.667 > 2.1667 > 0.533 > 0.4
223 > 136 > 815 > 25
Ordering includes mixed fractions, integers and decimals
Example: sort 13, 5, 8.5, 645 from largest to smallest
Method 1: Convert to the same denominator
First, convert the mixed fraction to the improper fraction and convert decimals to fractions
5 = 51
8.5 = 172
645 = 345
Then, convert to the same denominator
13 = 1030
51 = 15030
172 = 25530
345 = 20430
The denominator is the same, the numerator is larger, the fraction will be larger.
25530 > 20430 > 15030 > 1030
8.5 > 645 > 5 > 13
Method 2: Convert to decimals
13 = 0.33333
345 = 6.8
8.5 > 6.8 > 5 > 0.33333
8.5 > 645 > 5 > 13
