Let the number be X.

The two percentages are P₁ and P₂.

The difference between two percentages of the number is Y.

So, we can get an equation

X * P₁% – X * P₂% = Y

Among them, P₁, P₂ and Y are given numbers. X is the number to be calculated.

Thus, the formula for this problem is

X = YP₁% – P₂%

For example, what is the number if the difference between 55% and 15% of that number is 200?

Here, Y = 200, P₁ = 55 and P₂ = 15.

Substitute them into the formula

X = 20055% – 15%

X = 20040%

X = 2000.4

X = 500

500 * 55% = 500 * 0.55 = 275
