What is the arithmetic mean?

The arithmetic mean of a set of numbers is computed by the sum of the collection of numbers divided by the total count of numbers in the collection. This is simply called mean or average. The mathematical formula for arithmetic mean is

For example, to compute the average salary of an employee in a firm of 10 employees with salaries 2500, 2700, 2400, 2300, 2550, 2650, 2750, 2450, 2600 and 2400. You have to compute the arithmetic mean.

The arithmetic mean of salaries of 10 employees is

2500 + 2700 + 2400 + 2300 + 2550 + 2650 + 2750 + 2450 + 2600 + 240010 = 2530

  • 1If all the numbers in the data set have the same value, then the arithmetic mean also has the same value.
  • 2If the algebraic sum of the deviations of a set of numbers is zero, their arithmetic mean is always zero.
  • 3If each value of the data in the set of collection increases or decreases by the same fixed value, then the mean will also increase or decrease by the same value.
  • 4If each data in the set of collection of numbers is multiplied or divided by the same value, the mean is also multiplied or divided by the same value.
